USI men’s tennis signs Indiana State champion
Jarrod Epkey, the 2004 Indiana State Champion in boy’s tennis, has signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Southern Indiana in 2004-05. Epkey is the first player to sign with USI Head Coach Ross Brown this year.
In addition to being the 2004 state champion, Epkey has been named All-State and All-Conference each of his four seasons at Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana. He also helped CGHS to the 2001 state championship and to semi-state each season.
Outside of high school tennis, Epkey is ranked number three in central Indiana, 52nd in the midwest, and 104th in the nation.
Epkey will join his brother Joe, the 2004 GLVC Freshman of the Year, on the team. The elder Epkey was All-GLVC and led the team to the NCAA II Tournament with a 21-6 record in singles and combined with two different doubles partners to record a 21-8 doubles mark.
“Recruiting Jarrod to USI is very exciting for our tennis program,” said Brown. “He is obviously a very good tennis player, wining the state championship, but more importantly he is a quality young man and brings a professional attitude and great work ethic.
“I’m hoping that by having the Epkey brothers at USI will open the door for more of Indiana’s top tennis players to come to USI,” concluded Brown.
The Eagles, who were 14-8 overall last year, have appeared in five straight NCAA Division II Tournaments, won the GLVC Tournament four times since 1999, and the GLVC regular season titles four times since 1998.
