The Epkey brothers proved to be an invincible force on Saturday, combining to win both number one doubles matches and were perfect at number one and two singles. Sophomore Joe Epkey (Greenwood, Indiana) lost only two games in both singles matches, defeating Lipscomb’s Mike Sherman, 6-0 and 6-1, and UTM’s Dirk Pirinsolo, 6-0 and 6-1, at number one singles. Freshman Jarrod Epkey (Greenwood, Indiana) followed his brother by defeating Lipscomb’s Andrew Harris, 6-1 and 6-4, and UTM’s Gustavo Anzola, 6-3 and 6-4, for his first two collegiate wins at number two singles.
The Screaming Eagles started the year with the victory over Lipscomb by taking the doubles point. The Epkey brothers defeated Lipscomb’s Andrew Harris and Zach Bowman at number one singles, 8-4, while junior Ryan Hughes (England) and Nim Shetty (India) defeated Mike Sherman and Colten Jones, 8-6, at number two doubles.
The Eagles proceeded to pick up a victory by Shetty at number three singles to seal the 4-3 victory over Lipscomb.
In the loss to UTM, the Eagles lost the doubles points after losing two of the three matches. The wins at number one and two (the Epkeys) were the only other wins produced by the Eagles in the 5-2 loss.
