USI’s Joe Epkey advances to the semifinals
Epkey brothers fall in the doubles match
FT. MEYERS, FL – University of Southern Indiana sophomore Joe Epkey (Greenwood, Indiana) advanced to the semifinals of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Championships Thursday in Ft. Meyers, Florida. The championships are hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University.
Epkey raised his record to 12-2 this fall with a three-set, two-and-a-half hour victory over Richard Stempnowski from Florida Gulf Coast University. Epkey won the first set, 6-1, but lost the second 7-5 to set up the deciding 7-6 (7-3) tie-breaking third set.
Epkey moves into the semifinals on Friday against second-seeded Eduardo Rincon from Valdosta State University. Rincon advanced to the semifinals with a straight set (7-5, 7-5) victory over Peter Veslosky from Dowling University.
In doubles action, Joe and his brother, Jarrod, lost in straight sets to Robert Jendelund and Dale White from Armstrong Atlantic State University. The scores were 6-4, 6-4. The loss was the first of the fall for the Epkey brothers, who are 14-1 record this fall and will play Brian Bogus and Kyle Dougherty from Bloomsburg University in the consolation bracket Friday.
