USIís Joe Epkey falls in championship match
Epkey brothers finish fifth overall
FT. MEYERS, FL Ė University of Southern Indiana sophomore Joe Epkey (Greenwood, Indiana) fell short of the tennis programís first national title, losing to top-seeded Dante Cipulli of Southwest Baptist University in the Division II championship match of the Wilson/ITA National Championships in Ft. Meyers, Florida.
Epkey, 13-3 this fall in singles, lost in straight sets (6-0, 6-2) Saturday morning to Cipulli, who was the Division II runner-up a year ago in the ITA National Championships.
In doubles action, Joe and his brother, Jarrod, finished their doubles portion of the championships with a fifth place finish. The Epkeys defeated Mario Quintero and Kendall Smashey of St. Edward's University in a tie-breaking pro set. The brothers had to come from behind for the second match in a row, falling 6-3 in the opening set, but bounced back to win the second set, 6-3, and the tie-breaking pro set 10-6.
The Epkeys finish the fall with a 16-1 overall record.
