Epkey named Sargent Sportsmanship Award winner
FT. MEYERS, Fla.— University of Southern Indiana men’s tennis sophomore Joe Epkey (Greenwood, Indiana) was named the 2004 recipient of the men’s James O’Hara Sargent Sportsmanship Award, presented by Rolex Watch, USA. The award was presented at the Intercollegiate Tennis Associaion National Small College Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University.
The James O' Hara Sargent Sportsmanship Award goes to a men's and women's player who displays outstanding sportsmanship and exemplifies the spirit of college tennis during the course of the ITA National Small College Tennis Championships.
The award is given in memory of Jim Sargent, Media Manager for Rolex Watch, U.S.A., who was involved in a fatal car accident on Sept. 14, 2000. He was a great friend of college tennis, an ITA All-American who competed with outstanding success and sportsmanship at Lynchburg College, and afterwards continued as a special partner of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in his role with Rolex Watch, U.S.A.
Epkey, the first USI tennis singles player to ever advance to the ITA Small College Tennis Championships, finished second in the Division II bracket. The sophomore completed the first half of the 2004-05 season with a 13-3 singles record, 34-9 (.790) in his first year-and-a-half as a collegiate.
