USI men’s tennis takes two on the road
Friday's Box Score (USI 9, LU 0)
Saturday's Box Score (USI 7, SJC 1)
EVANSVILLE, Ind.–The University of Southern Indiana men’s tennis team raised its record back to the .500 mark with a pair of GLVC road victories Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. USI swept Lewis University, 9-0, Friday afternoon in Romeoville, Illinois, and nearly swept Saint Joseph’s College, 7-1, Saturday morning in Rensselaer, Indiana.
With the victories, USI raised its records to 6-6 overall in 2004-05 and remained perfect in the GLVC at 4-0.
USI sophomore number one singles player Joe Epkey (Greenwood, Indiana) raised his record to 20-5 this season, nine victories short of the school’s single season record of 29 set by Weston Phillips in 2001. Joe Epkey defeated Lewis’ John O’Neill (6-1, 6-3) Friday and SJC’s Dru Kitchell (6-1, 6-0) Saturday in straight sets.
Over two season, Joe Epkey has lost only one GLVC match and is a GLVC career mark of 10-1.
Also picking up a pair of singles wins this weekend was freshman Jarrod Epkey (Greenwood, Indiana). Jarrod Epkey raised his record to 13-6 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the league.
In doubles, the new combinations are working well for USI Head Coach Ross Brown. The new teams – Joe Epkey and junior Ryan Hughes (England) at number one Jarrod Epkey and senior Kyle Taylor (Veedersburg, Indiana) at number two and senior Evan Luttrell (Logansport, Indiana) and senior Nim Shetty (India) at number three – are 10-1 in GLVC play after a perfect weekend.
The next action for the Eagles will be at the USI Tennis Courts when they host Bellarmine University Wednesday at 3 p.m.
