USI sweeps major GLVC tennis awards

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men’s tennis team swept the major GLVC post-season honors with sophomore Joe Epkey (Greenwood, Indiana) being named Player of the Year freshman Jarrod Epkey (Greenwood, Indiana) being named Freshman of the Year and Head Coach Ross Brown being named Coach of the Year.

The Screaming Eagles begin the GLVC Tournament at 2 p.m. Friday against the winner of the #4 University of Missouri-St. Louis-#5 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the second round. The tournament, hosted by Saint Joseph’s College, is being played at the Recreational Sports Center at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

In addition to being named Player and Freshman of the Year, the Epkeys were named to the All-GLVC Team. They were joined on the All-GLVC team by USI senior Nim Shetty (India).

Joe Epkey is leading the Eagles at number one singles with a 22-5 record, 5-1 in the GLVC. The ITA Division II runner-up last fall also is 12-2 at number one singles in dual matches.

Jarrod Epkey ranks second behind his older brother with a 16-6 overall record, 7-0 in GLVC matches and 11-3 at number two singles in dual matches. Shetty is tied for third on the team with a 14-9 record, 5-0 in the GLVC at number three singles.

In doubles, Joe Epkey combined with junior Ryan Hughes (England) to post a 6-2 overall record at number one, 6-1 in the league. Joe and Jarrod Epkey were 17-3 in doubles last fall and earlier this spring.

Jarrod Epkey and senior Kyle Taylor (Veedersburg, Indiana) were a perfect 7-0 in the GLVC at number two doubles and 7-1 overall, while Shetty and senior Evan Luttrell (Logansport, Indiana) were a spotless 6-0 at number three doubles, 6-1 overall.
