USI gets first win of the year
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team won its first dual match of the season with a 9-0 sweep of Michigan Tech University Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis. USI improves to 1-3.
In singles, each member of the USI team won in straight sets with the exception of freshman Andrew Bostom (Terre Haute), who used all three sets to defeat Michigan Tech's Tim Viola at number six singles (6-2, 2-6, 7-5).
The Screaming Eagles were led by freshman Ben Hamm (Batesville, IN), who defeated MTU's Chris Verhurst at number four singles (6-0, 6-0), while senior Christoph Burger (Germany) won at number one singles (6-2, 6-0) over MTU's Brett Girard.
In the sweep of the doubles play, Burger and junior Nathan Sexton (Santee, CA) won 8-0 in number one doubles.
The next competition for the tennis Eagles is Friday February 29th as they travel to Eastern Kentucky University.
