HILTON HEAD, S.C.The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team finished its three-match Spring Break trip with a 2-1 record.

USI (3-5) started the week with a 7-2 victory over No. 28 Kutztown University on Monday, then defeated NCAA Division I foe North Carolina Central University, 7-0, Tuesday. The Screaming Eagles, however, fell to NCAA I Bucknell University, 7-0, Wednesday morning to conclude the trip.

Andrew McGuire

The Eagles started out their match with Kutztown by taking two-of-three in doubles action. Senior Andrew McGuire (Greenwood, Indiana) and freshman Ben Hamm (Batesville, Indiana) teamed for a 9-7 victory at number two doubles, while juniors Dustin Thomas (Corydon, Indiana) and Bryan Sulcer (Olney, Illinois) paired up for a 9-7 win at number three doubles.

Christoph Burger

In singles play, senior Christoph Burger (Wasserburg, Germany) led the Eagles with a straight-sets victory at number one singles. Junior Nathan Sexton (Santee, California) used a super-set tie-breaker in the third frame to post a 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (8) victory at number two singles. McGuire, Hamm, and Thomas all helped the Eagles to a 5-1 win in singles action.

After winning all three doubles matches in convincing style against N.C. Central, the Eagles wasted little time in singles play as every player posted a straight-set victory. Junior Tim Alcorn (Newburgh, Indiana) teamed up with Sulcer for a victory at number three doubles, while freshman Andrew Bostrom (Terre Haute, Indiana) got into the win column with victories at number six singles.

USI struggled in its match against Bucknell, falling 3-0 in doubles action before losing all six singles matches in straight sets.

For the week, McGuire and Hamm led the Eagles with a combined four wins each. Both went 2-1 in singles play and teamed for a 2-1 record in doubles action.

The Eagles return to action Friday at 2 p.m. when they host the University of West Alabama at the USI Tennis Courts.
