USI sweeps weekend with wins over Lewis and SJC

Box Score: Southern Indiana 9, Lewis 0

Box Score: Southern Indiana 5, Saint Joseph's 2

EVANSVILLE, Ind. The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team added to its conference win total this weekend with two GLVC road victories. The Screaming Eagles (8-9, 5-3 GLVC) blanked Lewis University, 9-0, Friday in Romeoville, Illinois before defeating Saint Joseph's College, 5-2, in Rensselaer, Indiana on Saturday.

USI Head Coach Ross Brown's squad didn't drop a set against the Flyers in singles play on Friday and outscored Lewis 8-1 in both doubles contests.

Senior Christoph Burger (Germany) and junior Nathan Sexton (Santee, California) won at number one singles and number two singles, respectively, and also combined for a win in number one doubles.

Senior Andrew McGuire (Greenwood, Indiana) and freshman Ben Hamm (Batesville, Indiana) won both their singles matches 6-1, 6-0 before combining to defeat Lewis' Christian Nunez and Chris Meyer at number two doubles.

The Flyers didn't have enough players to participate in number six singles or number three doubles, so the Eagles won both contests by default.

The Eagles won their third match out of their last four road games Saturday with the 5-2 victory over the Pumas.

Burger improved his individual record to 16-6 overall and 6-2 in the GLVC with a win over Saint Joseph's Brandon Ward (6-2, 6-3) at number one singles. McGuire won his seventh-consecutive match with his 6-2, 6-2 win over Kris McNeary at number three singles. Junior Dustin Thomas (Corydon, Indiana) won the final singles match for the Eagles with a win a number six singles.

Burger and Sexton won their second-straight at number one doubles, pushing their overall record as a pair to 7-7 for the season. McGuire and Hamm also won their second doubles contest of the weekend with an 8-6 victory over McNeary and Stoten Stofko at number two. The McGuire-Hamm combo extended its winning streak to four straight and improved their record to 9-6 overall and 6-2 in GLVC play.

The Eagles conclude their road trip with a Tuesday afternoon match at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. USI will close out the regular season Friday, April 18 when the host the Bellarmine University.
