Eagles going to GLVC Tournament
EVANSVILLE, Ind. The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team finished their regular season with an even record of 5-5 in conference play, advancing them to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament for the first time in three years.
The Screaming Eagles, who are 8-11 overall in 2007-08, are the sixth seed and is paired against third seeded Rockhurst University (10-4, 8-2 GLVC). Rockhurst finished their regular season with a win over Qunicy University after losing two matches to UMSL and Drury. Arturo Baravalle has been Rockhurst's top performer this season with a 12-1 overall singles record and a 10-4 record with Paul Ravkin at number one doubles.
After sweeping matches the previous weekend against Lewis and St. Joseph's College, USI dropped their last two matches to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Bellarmine University. Senior Christoph Burger (Germany) picked up his 17th victory in number one singles in the Eagles' loss to Bellarmine. Burger and junior Nathan Sexton (Santee, CA) have continued to be a dominant force for the Eagles at number one doubles, winning five of their last six matches.
In their last meeting in late March, USI lost to Rockhurst 8-1 with Burger picking up the solo win in straight sets against Rockhurst's Garrett Fischer. Their second meeting will be in the GLVC Tournament, which will be held at Center Grove North Middle School In Indianapolis, Indiana. Start time is 11 a.m.
If USI advances, it will move on to the semifinals to face the winner of University of Missouri-St. Louis and University of Indianapolis.
