Eagles split spring road trip

FLORIDA -- The University of Southern Indiana men's tennis team split its spring road swing, losing to Florida Tech University, 7-2, in Melbourne, Florida, and winning at Northwood University of Florida, 6-3, in West Palm Beach, Florida. USI is 2-2 to start the spring season.
The Screaming Eagles fell behind early against Florida Tech, losing two of the three doubles matches. Sophomore Joseph Boesing (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) and freshman Diego Gimenez (Venezuela) picked up USI's only doubles win, posting a victory at number one, 8-6.
Leading 2-1, Florida Tech locked up the victory by winning five of the six singles matches. Boesing got USI's only singles' win with a victory at number two singles over FIT's Jonathan Hanna in three sets (5-7, 7-5, 10-6).
The Eagles bounced back to defeat Northwood, 6-3. USI got on top early by winning two of the three doubles matches before winning four of six in singles.
Boesing and Gimenez got things started with an 8-3 win at number one doubles. Senior Nathan Sexton (Santee, California) and sophomore Ben Hamm (Batesville, Indiana) upped the lead to 2-1 with an 8-5 win at number two doubles.
In singles action, USI's Gimenez, Sexton, Hamm, and freshman Nathan Lattimer (Muncie, Indiana) sealed the victory with straight-set wins at number one, three, five, and six singles.
The Eagles return home to begin the 2009 home schedule on March 18 when they host Western Kentucky University at the USI Tennis Courts for a 3 p.m. USI returns to the road after the home opener to start GLVC play March 21 at Bellarmine University.
