Swisher signs with USI

The University of Southern Indiana men’s cross country/track and field program announces the signing of Chris Swisher to a letter of intent for the 2001 cross country and 2002 track and field. Swisher is the second runner signed by USI Head Coach Mike Hillyard this spring.

Swisher is a graduate of Milan High School in Milan, Indiana, where he participated in cross country, track, and basketball.

At the Indiana High School Athletic Association Track and Field meet, Swisher won the 1600-meters state championship with a time of 4:16.6. He upset Aaron Fisher, who had not lost to an Indiana competitor in three years for the victory. The winner of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award also took fifth in the 800-meters during the state track meet.

To go with this spring’s success at state, Swisher was a three-time sectional champion in the 800m and 1600m and regional 800m champion in 2001.

In his four seasons at MHS, Swisher was the conference Most Valuable Runner three times (1999-2001); County Most Valuable Runner twice (1999, 2000); and All-State twice (3rd team in 1999; 2nd team in 2000) in cross country. In track, he was conference and county Most Valuable Runner in 2001.

Academically, Swisher was selected for the U.S. Army Reserve Academic and Excellence Award, the Marine Corp Distinguished Athlete Award, the Scholastic Excellence Award.

"We are really excited with Chris’ recent success this spring," said Hillyard. "The USI program is very fortunate to have a student athlete of his caliber coming on board and he should make an immediate impact on cross country this fall.
