USI volleyball starts 2001 with
practice on August 4

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team, which is coming off its most successful season in the history of the program, will begin its 2001 campaign with the start of practice on Saturday, August 4. The Screaming Eagles will practice from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Physical Activities Center.

The Eagles will practice twice on Sunday, August 5, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., before starting three-a-day practices next week. The squad will practice from 9-11 a.m., 2-4 p.m., and 7:30-9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The practices are open to the public and groups wishing to view practice are asked to call 812/465-1789 ahead of time to confirm practice times and schedule. The media also is welcome at practice and is asked to call the USI Sports Information Office at 812/465-1622 or 812/475-0373 to confirm times and practice schedules.

The Eagles are coming off a 27-4 2000 campaign which saw them capture the Great Lakes Valley Conference’s Green Division title with a 14-2 mark and host the GLVC Tournament, finishing second. The volleyball team enters 2001 under the direction of new head coach Chrissy Smith, who is taking over for Katie Loyer.

Leading the way for the Eagles is first team All-GLVC players Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana), a junior outside hitter, and Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio), a sophomore setter who was the GLVC Freshman of the Year.

Wells broke-out in her sophomore campaign, finishing second in the nation with 0.89 service aces per game and becoming the second player in USI history to earn All-Great Lakes Regional honors. Her 93 services aces led the GLVC and set a school record. Boehmer finished fourth in the conference with 11.88 assists per game and set a school record with 1,236 assists per game.
