USI women's basketball
schedule features four from
2001 NCAA II Great Lakes Regional
The
University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team will face one of
its toughest schedules ever when it tips off the 2001-02 season. This year's
schedule will feature a team from the 2001 Elite Eight and four teams from the
NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional.
The
ball will be tossed up at center-court for the Screaming Eagles in Florida on
November 9 as they play in Disney's Division II Tip-Off Classic in Disney's
Wide World of Sports. USI will play the University of Nebraska-Omaha in the
first round of the three-day tournament.
The
Eagles will be looking for a rematch with Columbus State University, which is in
the opposite bracket, for their Elite Eight loss in March.
The
remainder of the 2001-02 non-conference schedule is no easier with contests at
the Physical Activities Center with NCAA II Great Lakes Regional teams Michigan
Tech University on November 19 and Northern Michigan University on December 18.
USI will travel to Michigan to play Ferris State University on December 30.
Along
with the crossover games with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference, the Eagles will host Grace College (Indiana) on December 15 and the
University of Illinois-Springfield on December 28.
USI
will begin its defense of its Great Lakes Valley Conference crowns early,
traveling to the University of Missouri-St. Louis on November 24 to start league
play. The GLVC schedule also includes a home-and-home with Northern Kentucky
University on December 8 in Highland Heights, Kentucky, and January 24 at the
PAC; and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on January 12 at the PAC and
February 7 in Edwardsville, Illinois. NKU, which won the NCAA II crown in 2000,
and SIUE were NCAA II Tournament teams a year ago.
The
league schedule also includes a home-and-home series with always challenging
Bellarmine University. The Eagles will host Bellarmine on January 26 and play in
Louisville on February 21.
USI
Head Coach Rick Stein, who needed only two seasons to lead the Screaming
Eagles to its second NCAA II Elite Eight appearance, will be looking to repeat
that success in 2001-02. Stein, who lost four seniors to graduation, still has
plenty of weapons at his disposal for this season, returning eight letterwinners.
Leading
the way is sophomore forward Jessica Stuckman, the 2001 GLVC Freshman of
the Year who was third on the team in scoring with 14.8 ppg and 6.4 rpg. She
will be joined by a senior class which includes 2001 honorable mention All-GLVC
point guard Jasmine Moore, who averaged 9.7 ppg and 4.8 assists; senior
forward Casey Hughes, who was fourth on the team with 10.9 ppg; and
senior forward Michelle Irwin (Louisville, Kentucky), who averaged 5.5
ppg and 4.3 rpg.
To
replace some of the scoring punch lost from last spring's graduation, Stein
has added junior forward Sarah McIntosh, who averaged 20.0 ppg and 5.8
rpg at Kankakee Community College in 2000-01; junior forward/center Stacy
Karzin, who is transferring to USI from Black Hawk College where she
averaged 14.4 ppg, 10.6 rpg, and 4.4 blocks a contest last season; and junior
forward/center Africa Sherrod, a transfer from Tallahassee Community
College where she averaged 7.1 ppg and 7.5 rpg.
