Fall Review/Spring Outlook

USI women’s golf team finishes fall season with strong performance look to continue success in 2001 spring season

The University of Southern Indiana women’s golf team finished the 2000 fall season with a strong performance in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The Eagles finished second, just four shots behind the University of Indianapolis.

USI’s second-place performance at the GLVC Tournament matched its best finish of the season. The Eagles started the year out with a third-place performance at the Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational.

Seniors Lindsey McGrath (Kentland, Indiana) and Laura Compton (Evansville, Indiana) turned in their top finishes of the season as the Eagles finished second in the USI Fall Invitational. McGrath finished first with an 80 (+6) while Compton finished second with an 82 (+8).

USI struggled in its next two tournaments, finishing eighth at the Evansville Lady Aces Invitational Tournament and ninth at the Indianapolis Fall Classic.

As a team, the Eagles finished the first round of the GLVC Tournament with a season-best 343. USI bettered that total a day later as it shot a 339 to close out the season.

McGrath led the Eagles with 82.6 shots per round while Compton was second on the squad with 83.9 shots per round.

The Eagles will try to build off the success they had in the fall and shoot for a possible berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament at the Rockhill Country Club in Rockhill, South Carolina, but will face an uphill climb as  only eight teams and eight individuals qualify to play for the national title.

The squad will be without McGrath during the spring, making the task of qualifying even tougher. McGrath graduated from USI  in December with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Compton, who is a two-time All-GLVC performer and holds every USI individual record, will be backed up by junior Kristy Herndon (Greensburg, Indiana). Herndon, who struggled during the middle of the fall season, regained her stroke to shoot a two-day 176 (86-90) at the GLVC Tournament and averaged 96.0 in the five tournaments.

USI Head Coach Don Bisesi hopes for the continued maturity of his freshmen for team success in the spring. Freshman Melissa Penman (Brazil, Indiana) was third on the team during the fall with a 95.2 average, while freshman Brandi Irvin (Benton, Illinois) was fourth with a 95.2 average.

The Eagles also will have freshmen Michelle Hamilton (Mt. Vernon, Indiana), Jennifer Beaman (Evansville, Indiana), Laura Lingner (Brownsburg, Indiana), and Laura Nichols (Avon, Indiana) compete for the fifth slot.
