USI softball sweeps GLVC “Player/Pitcher of Week” honors
The University of Southern Indiana softball team got some good news today when it heard that the Great Lakes Valley Conference had selected junior pitcher/centerfielder Rachel Bowling (Middletown, Indiana) and senior hurler Danielle Garnett (Griffith, Indiana) as its Player and Pitcher of the Week.
Bowling earned GLVC “Player of the Week” honors after leading the Screaming Eagles to an 8-2 record at the Division II Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Florida. In USI’s 3-1 win over fourth-ranked Lewis University, Bowling went 2-of-3 from the plate, including a solo homerun.
For the week, Bowling hit .483 with seven RBI and a pair of long balls. She also went 4-1 from the mound with a 0.68 ERA and a win over 16th-ranked Dowling College. Bowling is an exercise science major and a graduate of Pendleton Heights High School.
Garnett earned GLVC “Pitcher of the Week” honors after posting a 4-1 record at the Division II Rebel Spring Games. She gave up just one run off four hits and recorded six strikeouts while not allowing a base on balls in USI’s win over Lewis. She recorded seven strikeouts and allowed just one unearned run in USI’s 2-1, nine-inning, victory over regional foe Findlay.
For the week, Garnett recorded a 1.03 ERA and recorded 25 strikeouts while giving up just three free passes to first base in 34 innings of work. Garnett is a biology major and a graduate of Griffith High School. She transferred to USI from Wabash Valley Junior College.
It is the second time in Garnett’s two-year career at USI that she has earned the honor and the first time in Bowling’s three-year career at USI that she has earned the honor.
Bowling and Garnett, along with the rest of the USI softball team, will open their 2002 home schedule Thursday, March 21, when they host Brescia University in a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
