USI softball team set for home opener

The University of Southern Indiana softball team will open its 2002 home schedule this Thursday, March 21, when Brescia University comes to the USI Softball Field for a 4 p.m. doubleheader. It will mark the first time in 12 days that the Screaming Eagles have taken the field of play.

Prior to the 12-day layoff, the Eagles posted an 8-2 record at the Division II Spring Rebel Games in Orlando, Florida. The Eagles outscored their opposition 48-10 and posted wins against fourth-ranked Lewis University and 16th-ranked Dowling College in addition to regional foe Findlay.

Leading the way for the Eagles, who are 10-7 on the year, is junior centerfielder/pitcher Rachel Bowling (Middletown, Indiana) and senior hurler Danielle Garnett (Griffith, Indiana). The two earned Great Lakes Valley Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week honors for their efforts in Florida.

Bowling leads the team with a .408 batting average and has a team-high four homeruns and 13 RBI. She also is sporting a team-low 1.56 earned run average in 49.1 innings of pitching duties. Bowling is 4-4 in 10 appearances on the mound.

Griffith has a 2.03 ERA and is 6-3 on the season. She has a team-high 42 strikeouts as well as a team-low .241 opponent batting average.

USI is hitting .286 in its 17 games this season and is getting great efforts at the plate from sophomores Brooke Biggs (Osceola, Indiana), Lacey Haynes (Boonville, Indiana), and Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana). Haynes is second on the squad with a .381 batting average while Biggs and Houseworth are averaging .375 and .312, respectively, from the plate.

Biggs is tied with senior third baseman Molly Blackford (Newburgh, Indiana) for second with nine runs batted in.

USI will open its 2002 GLVC schedule Saturday, March 23, when it plays host to Bellarmine University. It will end its weekend Sunday, March 24, when Kentucky Wesleyan College comes to the USI Softball Field. Both match-ups are doubleheaders and are scheduled for 1 p.m. starts.
