USI softball sweeps Missouri-St. Louis

The University of Southern Indiana swept a doubleheader against the University of Missouri-St. Louis this afternoon at the USI Softball Field in Evansville, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles won both games by a score of 1-0 as they improved to 16-12 overall and 6-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Senior hurler Danielle Garnett (Griffith, Indiana) spread five hits throughout 10 innings to record the victory in game one. Garnett struck out three batters and allowed just one walk to record her second shutout of the season and improve to 10-6.

With no score in the bottom of the 10th inning, the Eagles got senior third baseman Molly Blackford (Newburgh, Indiana) aboard on a leadoff walk. A sacrifice bunt and a ground ball to second base got Blackford to third with two outs.

After a pair of walks, junior shortstop Jenny Duell (Lafayette, Indiana) stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded. Duell grounded the ball to UMSL’s shortstop Jill Huwe. Huwe had trouble handling the ball, allowing Duell to reach first base and Blackford to cross the plate and give USI the 1-0 game-one victory.

Defense was once again the story in game two as the two teams found themselves in the midst of another pitching duel. While USI could not amount much offense, its defense got junior pitcher/centerfielder Rachel Bowling (Middletown, Indiana) out of a couple of jams early in the contest.

With the bases loaded in the top of the third inning and no outs, Bowling got UMSL first baseman Kelly Jackson to ground into a 5-2-3 double play. UMSL’s following batter, Cassey Attebery, could not do much better as she grounded out to shortstop ending the Riverwomen threat in the top of the third.

Bowling found herself in trouble in the top of the fourth as she, once again, had the bases loaded. This time, USI Head Coach Sue Kunkle turned to freshman pitcher Brandy Bates (Boonville, Indiana), who had not seen action since the start of the year when she give up three runs in the her only appearance of the season.

With one out, Bates got out of the jam as she forced both the batters she faced to fly out to right field. Bates went onto throw the rest of the game, giving up just three hits, as she picked up her first career win.

UMSL had a chance to score in the top of the fifth when its catcher, Lindsay Brefeld, singled to centerfield with a runner on second base. However, Bowling—who went in to play centerfield—gunned the runner down as she rounded third and attempted to score.

Like in game one, it was Blackford who would score the winning run in game two. With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, Blackford doubled to leftfield. Blackford came around to score one batter later as junior Ginnie Roberts (Lafayette, Indiana) singled to leftfield to record the RBI.

USI will host Quincy University tomorrow afternoon at the USI Softball Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. UMSL falls to 19-14 overall, 4-3 GLVC, with the losses.
