USI softball team sweeps GLVC honors

The University of Southern Indiana softball team swept the Great Lakes Valley Conference “Pitcher/Player of the Week” honors after posting a 6-0 record last week. It is the second time this season that the Eagles have swept the honors.

Senior hurler Danielle Garnett (Griffith, Indiana) earned GLVC “Pitcher of the Week” honors after posting four consecutive shutouts in four appearances. Garnett, who has recorded six straight shutouts, struck out 27 batters while allowing just 12 hits and two walks in 28 innings of work.

Garnett has seen her ERA drop from 2.34 to 1.62 in less than two weeks while her 45 consecutive scoreless innings pitched is just 6 1/3 innings from tying the school record.

It is the second time this season and the third time in Garnett’s career with USI that she has earned the honor. Garnett is a biology major and a graduate of Griffith High School. She transferred to USI from Wabash Valley Junior College.

Junior centerfielder/pitcher Rachel Bowling (Middletown, Indiana) earned GLVC “Player of the Week” honors after hitting .667 with a pair of home runs and nine runs batted in. Bowling recorded eight hits and was walked seven times, including an intentional pass to first base.

USI’s all-time homerun leader, with 27, recorded a 1.333 slugging percentage and a .789 on-base percentage during the six-game stretch. Bowling also recorded a 1.000 fielding percentage, which included a spectacular diving grab to save a run in game two of USI’s doubleheader against Saint Joseph’s College.

It is the second time this season and the second time in Bowling’s career that she has earned the honor. Bowling is an exercise science major and a graduate of Pendleton Heights High School.

The Screaming Eagles will host McKendree College this Wednesday, April 17 in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. USI has won 10 straight games and will close its 2002 home schedule with the doubleheader against McKendree. The Eagles will compete in the Great Lakes Regional Tournament this weekend (Friday, April 19 – Sunday, April 21) in South Bend, Indiana.
