The University of Southern Indiana softball team just did not have enough gas left in the tank to defeat Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, finishing second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. USI won the first game Sunday afternoon in Romeoville, Illinois, 6-3, but fell in the deciding game 4-0.
The Screaming Eagles finished the day with a record of 31-18, while SIUE goes to 49-10.
Senior right-handed pitcher Danielle Garnett (Griffith, Indiana) pitched all but two innings for the Eagles this weekend, posting a 5-2 record and 45 innings pitched. She had two shutouts, allowed just 40 hits, gave up 12 runs (nine earned), and had an ERA of 1.40 over the seven contests. Garnett also struck out 44 batters.
Offensively, junior centerfielder Rachel Bowling (Middletown, Indiana) led USI with a two-for-five performance in the both games. Bowling had her fifth home run of the tournament in game one, a three-run shot in the third inning. She also was walked three times in Sunday’s games.
Bowling hit .375 in the tournament (6-16) with nine RBIs and five runs scored to go with her five round trippers. She also walked seven times.
The Eagles will learn Monday, May 6, whether the GLVC Tournament run was enough to earn a spot in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional. USI entered league tournament action ranked ninth in the final regional poll.
