USI softball lands three on NFCA All-Region Team

The University of Southern Indiana softball team had three players named to the 2002 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region Team. It is the most players the Screaming Eagles have had selected to the squad since 1999 when they had four players selected NFCA All-Region.

Junior utility player Rachel Bowling (Middletown, Indiana) earned first-team All-Region honors after hitting a career-high .388 with a school-record 16 home runs, five coming in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. Bowling, who is the all-time leader at USI in career home runs (33) and career RBI (117), also recorded 41 RBI and a .822 slugging percentage.

The first-team All-Region award is the second straight for Bowling, who has been named first-team All-GLVC in each of her three seasons at USI.

Senior pitcher Danielle Garnett (Griffith, Indiana) earned second-team All-Region honors after posting a 21-10 overall record and a team-low 1.65 earned run average. Garnett, who ranks fifth all-time at USI in career strikeouts (298), finished the regular season ranked second in the GLVC in total strikeouts (132). She recorded a 5-2 record, a 1.40 ERA, and 44 strikeouts in 45 innings of work at the GLVC Tournament.

At one point during the season, Garnett recorded six consecutive shutouts and had 47 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings. Garnett also was named first-team All-GLVC marking the second straight season she has earned All-GLVC honors.

Sophomore catcher Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) joined Garnett on the second team after hitting .298 during the regular season with a home run and 15 RBI. Houseworth was solid behind the plate, recording a perfect fielding percentage and throwing out 10 runners. She started 48 of USIís 49 games behind the plate and earned first-team All-GLVC honors.

The three helped lead the Eagles to a 31-18 record, 10-7 in the GLVC, and a second-place finish in the GLVC Tournament. USI was one game away from a berth in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament.
