Burton signs with USI
The University of Southern Indiana softball team announced Friday that second baseman/utility player Kerrie Burton (Kokomo, Indiana) has signed a national letter of intent for the 2004 season. Burton joins Henderson, Kentucky native Nikki Nichols as the first two players to sign with Head Coach Sue Kunkle’s Screaming Eagles this fall.
A senior at Northwestern High School in Kokomo, Indiana, Burton has hit at least .419 in each of her first three seasons at NHS. As a lead-off hitter during that span, Burton has recorded 97 hits and 49 stolen bases.
Burton’s ability does not limit her to just an offensive threat. “Kerrie has great range in the infield and also has good speed,” Kunkle explained.
Her efforts have landed her first-team All-Conference and All-County honors as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. She also has been named to the Hoosier Diamond State Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior All-Star teams.
“We are extremely fortunate to have Kerrie become a part of our program,” Kunkle said. “She will make an immediate impact in the infield as well as at the plate. She is a very intense hitter.”
A member of the 18-and-under Easton Redline team, Burton hit .326 and recorded 28 hits in 2001 before hitting .378 and recording 34 hits in 2002. Her efforts helped the team qualify for the NSA World Series in both seasons.
Prior to that, Burton played for the 16-and-under Center Grove Gators. She hit .410 and recorded 39 hits for the Gators in 2000 and helped the squad qualify for the NSA World Series as well.
A three-year letterwinner in softball at NHS, Burton also has competed in volleyball as well as diving and swimming. Burton has compiled three varsity letters in volleyball while earning two varsity letters on the dive and swim team.
“Kerrie and her family instantly fit in with the coaches and the team during her visit to USI,” Kunkle said. “She realized that USI was the place for her.”
