Eagles get back on winning track in style

The University of Southern Indiana softball team got back on the winning track Tuesday evening by winning a pair of games against Oakland City University in Oakland City, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles won the first game, 5-2, and the second game, 14-2 (5 innings) to improve to 4-7 on the season.
In game one, the Eagles used a pair of runs in the top of the fifth and three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to slide by the Lady Oaks. Junior second baseman Brooke Biggs (Osceola, Indiana) went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Eagles from the plate.
USI recorded eight hits and took advantage of three OCU errors as it snapped its six-game losing streak. Senior centerfielder Rachel Bowling (Middleton, Indiana) recorded a pair of RBIs while juniors Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) and Nichole Pike (Fairfield, Illinois) also knocked in a run apiece.
Freshman hurler Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) picked up the victory in the first game after tossing seven innings and giving up two runs off five hits. Grover struck out seven hitters and walked just one batter to improve to 2-2 on the season.
In game two, the Eagles scored a pair of runs in the first and another in the second before exploding for nine runs in the top of the third inning. Four players had multiple hits for the Eagles as they recorded their largest offensive output of the season.
Evansville native Jessica Brown (Memorial) and freshman catcher Amy Atteberry (Whiting, Indiana) each had a pair of RBIs in the win. Brown went 2-for-2 from the plate while Atteberry recorded a two-run home run in her first collegiate at-bat.
Junior Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) picked up the win as she threw three innings, giving up just one hit and no runs. Emmons (2-5) out-dueled her older sister, Rachel Emmons, who was charged with the loss.
The Eagles will open Great Lakes Valley Conference play Saturday, March 22, as they travel to Edwardsville, Illinois, to take on 16th-ranked SIU Edwardsville in a doubleheader. USI will return home the following day to take on the University of Missouri-St. Louis in a GLVC doubleheader. Both games are slated for noon starts.
