USI softball looking to extend home winning streak
When the University of Southern Indiana softball team takes the field this Saturday against Lewis University, it will be looking to extend its 16-game home winning streak. The Screaming Eagles won their last 14 home games of 2002 and started this seasonís home schedule with a pair of GLVC wins against Missouri-St. Louis.
After starting the season with a 2-7 record, the Eagles have won four of their last six games to get to 6-9 (2-2 GLVC).
USI has seen plenty of offensive firepower out of junior catcher Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) and junior second baseman Brooke Biggs (Osceola, Indiana). Houseworth leads the team and is third in the conference with a .419 batting average. She also leads the team with three home runs and is tied for the lead with eight RBIs.
Biggs is second on the squad with a .405 batting average and is third amongst Eagle batters with seven RBIs.
The Eagles have also seen production out of sophomore rightfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) and senior centerfielder Rachel Bowling (Middletown, Indiana). Oelling is hitting .314 and is coming off a 2-for-3 game against Missouri-St. Louis in which she recorded a double, a triple, and a pair of RBIs.
Bowling opened conference play by hitting a pair of home runs.
Defensively, the Eagles have struggled with their pitching staff. However, junior Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) and freshman Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) have shown promising signs.
After being shelled against SIU Edwardsville on Saturday, Emmons came back on Sunday to pick up two victories and pitch 7 1/3 innings of scoreless softball. Despite picking up a loss on Saturday, Grover held SIU Edwardsville to six scoreless innings.
The Eagles will play Lewis University Saturday and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday. First pitch for both games is slated for noon. USI is 106-27 (.797) at the USI Softball Field since 1995.
