Northern Kentucky 8, USI 0 (5 innings)
The University of Southern Indiana softball team was held to a combined five hits in two games as it fell to Northern Kentucky University, 2-0 and 8-0, Saturday afternoon in Highland Heights, Kentucky. The Screaming Eagles fall to 11-12 overall and 5-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while the Norse improve to 20-9 overall, 9-3 in the GLVC.
In game one, the Eagles gave up two runs off three hits in the bottom of the second inning. That was all the Norse would need as they held the Eagles to just four hits in seven innings.
Junior pitcher Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) fell to 6-8 on the season after being charged with the loss. Emmons gave up two runs off six hits in six innings of work.
Like the first game, game two’s offensive outburst came in the bottom of the second inning. The Norse reeled off six runs off five hits in the inning to take a commanding lead. They added two more in the bottom of the fourth inning and held the Eagles to one hit throughout five innings to win via the eight-run rule.
Freshman hurler Missy Grover (Misawaka, Indiana) gave up all eight runs off nine hits in four innings of work. Grover falls to 4-4 on the season with the loss.
The Eagles will travel to Louisville, Kentucky, Sunday to take on Bellarmine University. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. (CT).
