The University of Southern Indiana softball team swept a doubleheader from NAIA 18th-ranked McKendree College Tuesday afternoon in Lebanon, Illinois, to extend its season-long win streak to 10 games. The Screaming Eagles won game one, 6-1, and game two, 8-5, to improve to 22-16 on the season.
In game one, junior catcher Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) went 4-for-4 with a homerun, a double, three runs scored, and a pair of RBIs. Senior centerfielder Rachel Bowling (Middleton, Indiana) kept pace with Houseworth’s season-total of five home runs by blasting her fifth one of the season, a two-run shot that scored Houseworth, over the leftfield fence.
Defensively, junior first baseman Monica Tepe (Granger, Indiana) became USI’s all-time leader in career putouts (846) with six putouts in the first game.
Junior pitcher Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) spread 10 hits throughout seven innings of work to pick up her 12th victory of the season. Emmons (12-12) gave up just one run and did not allow a walk.
In game two, the Eagles jumped on a Bearcat mistake in the top of the second inning to plate five runners. USI recorded five hits in the inning to jump out to the early 5-0 lead.
USI added another in the top of the four inning and freshman catcher Amy Atteberry (Whiting, Indiana), who is hitting .833 on the season, added insurance by blasting her second home run, a two-run shot over the leftfield fence, of the season.
After retiring the first nine batters she faced in order, freshman pitcher Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) gave up two homeruns that cost the Eagles five runs. Grover (9-4) managed to pick up the win after giving up the five runs off six hits in six innings of work.
Freshman hurler Christie Schubert (Millstadt, Illinois) finished the game for the Eagles to pick up her first save of the season.
USI will return to GLVC action this Sunday, April 27, as it travels to Quincy, Illinois, to take on Quincy University. The doubleheader, scheduled for noon, is USI’s GLVC regular-season finale. The Eagles will come home the following day to host Brescia University in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at the USI Softball Field.
