Eagles honored by GLVC for second straight week
University of Southern Indiana softball junior catcher Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) and junior pitcher Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) have earned co-GLVC Player and Pitcher of the Week honors after helping the Screaming Eagles post a 4-0 record and clinch the fourth seed in the GLVC Tournament this past week.
Houseworth earned co-GLVC Player of the Week honors after hitting .538 with two home runs and four RBIs. She started the week with a 4-for-4 performance against NAIA No. 18-ranked McKendree College before hitting a two-run home run in the first game of a doubleheader against Quincy University on Sunday. Houseworth went 2-of-4 in the night cap against Quincy.
This marks the first time in Houseworth’s career that she has earned GLVC Player of the Week honors. She earned All-GLVC and All-Region honors as a sophomore in 2002 and leads the team in 2003 with six home runs and 30 runs batted in.
Houseworth joins junior third baseman Nichole Pike (Fairfield, Illinois) as USI’s two players to earn Player of the Week honors. Pike earned the award a week ago.
Emmons won two games and saved another while posting a 0.51 ERA to earn co-GLVC Pitcher of the Week honors. In addition, Emmons collected nine hits in 16 at-bats (.562 average).
This marks the second straight week that Emmons has earned the honor. Emmons gave up just one run while pitching a complete game as USI defeated McKendree, 6-1. She also was 2-of-4 from the plate in that game.
She came back to throw a complete game and was 2-of-4 from the plate with two RBIs in a 9-0 victory over Quincy. Emmons went 3-of-4 from the plate in USI’s 6-3 victory over Quincy and came on in relief to pick up her second save of the weekend.
SIU Edwardsville’s Veronica Schmidt and Mary Heather White also were named Player and Pitcher of the Week honors. Schmidt earned co-Player of the Week honors while White earned co-Pitcher of the Week honors.
USI will take on Bellarmine University this Friday, May 2, in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. First pitch is slated for 9 a.m. at the Cougar Field on the campus of SIU Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Illinois.
