The University of Southern Indiana softball team had its 2003 season come to an end Friday evening as it went 1-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in Edwardsville, Illinois.
After falling 6-3 to fifth-seeded Bellarmine University in the opening Friday morning, the fourth-seeded Screaming Eagles got a two-run double from junior catcher Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) in the top of the sixth inning to get by second-seeded Northern Kentucky University, 2-0, in the elimination bracket.
Freshman hurler Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) pitched a two-hit shutout to pick up her 12th win of the season.
USI ran into a wall in senior hurler Emily Granath when it faced third-seeded Lewis University in the next round. Granath scattered five hits throughout seven innings as the Eagles fell 3-0 and failed to reach 30 wins for the first time in seven years.
Grover (12-5) was charged with the loss after giving up three runs off 11 hits.
In their first game against Bellarmine, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. However, Bellarmine scratched its way back into the game, scoring a run in the top of the third and four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead.
USI surrendered another run in the top of the fifth inning before tacking on a run in the bottom of the fifth to reach the final score of 6-3.
Junior pitcher Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) was charged with the loss after giving up five runs off nine hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.
The Eagles conclude their season with a 27-18 record and a final regional ranking of ninth. All-GLVC awards will be announced Saturday morning.
