Eagles land four on All-Region squad
The University of Southern Indiana softball team had four players named to the Great Lakes All-Region team in vote done by the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association (NFCA).
Junior catcher Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana), junior third baseman Nichole Pike (Fairfield, Illinois), and sophomore outfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) earned first-team honors while junior pitcher Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) was named to the second team.
Houseworth, who is making the squad for the second straight season, hit a career-high .371 with six home runs and 32 runs batted in during the 2003 campaign. She committed just one error in 41 games behind the plate.
Pike, who transferred to USI from Wabash Valley Junior College, hit .333 with a pair of home runs and 27 RBIs in her first season with the Screaming Eagles. Oelling hit a team-leading .401 with 34 runs scored and 19 runs batted in during her sophomore season.
Emmons recorded a team-low 1.89 ERA and a team-high 14 wins as a pitcher. She hit .383 with team-leading 16 doubles to go along with a home run and 24 RBIs from the plate.
USI finished the 2003 campaign with a 27-18 overall record and a 13-7 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Eagles closed out the regular season with 14 straight wins before going 1-2 in the GLVC Tournament.
