USI softball lands Princeton native,
Henson to transfer from Wabash

The University of Southern Indiana softball team announced the signing of junior outfielder Nickole Henson (Princeton, Indiana) to a national letter of intent. Henson is the fifth player to sign with head coach Sue Kunkle’s Screaming Eagles for the 2004 season.

A transfer from Wabash Valley Junior College, Henson recorded 56 stolen bases while hitting .453 with 53 RBIs in two seasons with WVJC. In 2003, Henson’s .437 batting average and 24 RBIs helped WVJC to a 41-9 record.

Prior to attending WVJC, Henson was a four-time All-County and All-Conference performer at Princeton Community High School in Princeton, Indiana. In addition, she also earned two All-Southwestern awards and was the PCHS’s MVP as a senior in 2001.

Henson, who is the fourth player to transfer to USI from Wabash Valley in the last four seasons, will be paired in the outfield with All-GLVC and All-Region performer Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana).

“Nickole will be a huge addition to our outfield as well as our offensive lineup,” Kunkle stated. “She brings speed, power, and leadership to our program.”

In addition to being paired with Oelling, Henson joins former Wabash teammates Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) and Nichole Pike (Fairfield, Illinois) on USI’s 2004 roster. Both Emmons and Pike made a successful transition from junior college to Division II as both earned All-GLVC and All-Region honors.

“Wabash has provided our program with several talented athletes such as Emmons and Pike,” Kunkle explained. “I am very excited to have her on my team and we look for her to do big things while she is here at USI.”

Henson joins an Eagle squad that finished 27-18 in 2003. USI returns five first-team All-Conference performers, four of which were named All-Great Lakes Region.

In addition to Henson’s signing, the Eagles have signed freshmen Kerrie Burton (Kokomo, Indiana), Elizabeth Church (Philpot, Kentucky), Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky), and Suzanne Pressel (Middletown, Indiana).
