USI softball announces early signings

The University of Southern Indiana softball team announced the signings of six players to a national letter of intent for the 2005 season. They are the first players to sign with Head Coach Sue Kunkle’s Screaming Eagles for next season.

Kunkle entered the recruiting season in need of signing a large class for the 2005 season. USI, which begins its 2004 campaign in late February, will loose six seniors from its roster after the season.

“This recruiting class is very important to our program,” Kunkle explained. “We are about to graduate six of our finest in May. However, we are excited and optimistic about this class and the talent of our returning players. We will continue to be at the top of the pack!”

USI’s recruiting class is listed below:

-Angie Davis (Greenwood, Indiana) is a 5’6” catcher/first baseman that will come to USI from Wabash Valley Junior College where she was named to the Region XXIV All-Tournament team. She helped WVJC to the 2003 Region XXIV championship and trip to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament.

A high school standout at Center Grove High School, Davis was a member of four county championship and three sectional championship squads. CGHS also won a regional and semi-state title and was the IHSAA Class 3A state finalist in 2002.

“Angie is a solid player who will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our team,” Kunkle said.

-Krista Nugent (Hurricane, Utah) is a 5’7” shortstop/outfielder that will come to USI from Western Nebraska Community College. Nugent earned honorable mention All-NJCAA I Region IX after hitting .310 with 12 doubles and a pair of triples as a freshman in 2003. She also was 15-of-16 in the stolen base department while earning Academic All-Region IX.

“Krista is a talented and experienced player,” Kunkle said. “She has speed, range, and an aggressive style of play. She is a well-rounded athlete and a true gamer.”

A graduate of Hurricane High School in Hurricane, Utah, Nugent earned 10 varsity letters in basketball, softball, and volleyball. “Krista is the type of player who will run through a wall to make a play,” Kunkle said. “She will make an immediate impact and will be looked to replace Nichole Pike at shortstop.”

-Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) is a senior utility player at Tecumseh High School were she has earned three All-Pocket Athletic Conference honors. Wood was named second-team All-State as a junior and was a member of the Class A State Finalist squad.

“Kathy will add depth and provide more speed to our outfield,” Kunkle explained. “She will develop into a very good pitcher and is expected to be an important part of our staff.”

A 2003-04 Wendy’s High School Heisman State Finalist, Wood has been named All-Southwestern Indiana twice by the Evansville Courier and Press. “Kathy is an aggressive and enthusiastic player with tremendous drive,” Kunkle stated. “We look for her to be a leader on the field and in the classroom.”

-Toni Finn (Thornton, Colorado) is a senior utility player at Northglenn High School in Northglenn, Colorado. “Toni is coming a long way from home, but is very enthusiastic about her opportunities her at USI,” Kunkle explained. “She has played several infield positions as well as outfield and will be looked at in many different spots throughout her career. Toni will work hard to excel at whatever is thrown her way.”

-Kristen Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) is a senior utility player at Crestview High School in Convoy, Ohio, where she has earned second-team All-State honors as a sophomore and junior. Eickholt also has earned three first-team All-Conference and All-District honors and was the conference “Player of the Year” in 2002 and 2003.

A member of the Ohio Division III state finalist squad at CHS, Eickholt also earned two All-Conference awards in basketball.

“Kristen is a hard-core player,” Kunkle said. “She is a great leader on the field and will
