USI softball announces early signings
The University of Southern Indiana softball team announced the signings of six players to a national letter of intent for the 2005 season. They are the first players to sign with Head Coach Sue Kunkle’s Screaming Eagles for next season.
Kunkle entered the recruiting season in need of signing a large class for the 2005 season. USI, which begins its 2004 campaign in late February, will loose six seniors from its roster after the season.
“This recruiting class is very important to our program,” Kunkle explained. “We are about to graduate six of our finest in May. However, we are excited and optimistic about this class and the talent of our returning players. We will continue to be at the top of the pack!”
USI’s recruiting class is listed below:
-Angie Davis (Greenwood, Indiana) is a 5’6” catcher/first baseman that will come to USI from Wabash Valley Junior College where she was named to the Region XXIV All-Tournament team. She helped WVJC to the 2003 Region XXIV championship and trip to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament.
A high school standout at Center Grove High School, Davis was a member of four county championship and three sectional championship squads. CGHS also won a regional and semi-state title and was the IHSAA Class 3A state finalist in 2002.
“Angie is a solid player who will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our team,” Kunkle said.

“Kathy will add depth and provide more speed to our outfield,” Kunkle explained. “She will develop into a very good pitcher and is expected to be an important part of our staff.”
A 2003-04 Wendy’s High School Heisman State Finalist, Wood has been named All-Southwestern Indiana twice by the Evansville Courier and Press. “Kathy is an aggressive and enthusiastic player with tremendous drive,” Kunkle stated. “We look for her to be a leader on the field and in the classroom.”
