USI softball splits with Valdosta

VALDOSTA, Ga.óThe University of Southern Indiana softball team split a twin bill Wednesday afternoon with Valdosta State University. The Screaming Eagles won the first game, 3-1, before dropping the second game, 3-2.
USI (6-7) took advantage of Valdosta errors to score a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning and another in the fifth inning to pull out the victory in the first game. Senior catcher/utility player Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) reached on an error and eventually scored the first run of the contest while freshman infielder Kerrie Burton (Kokomo, Indiana) scored USIís second run of the game after reaching via a walk.
Senior pitcher/infielder Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) picked up the complete-game victory after giving up just one run off seven hits. Emmons (4-3) helped herself from the plate by recording three of USIís four hits in the first game.
The Eagles grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second game when freshman catcher Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) hit a solo home run to leftfield in the top of the sixth inning. Anderson was 1-for-1 in the contest with a pair of walks.
USI, however, could not hold onto the lead as the Blazers scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to salvage the split.
Sophomore hurler Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) was charged with the loss after giving up three runs, two earned, off six hits in six innings of work. Grover falls to 2-4 with the decision.
VSUís Ashley Ward (1-5) was pinned with the loss in game one, while Brooke King (4-8) picked up the victory in the second game. The Blazers are now 6-20 with the two-game split.
USI will travel to Lakeland, Florida, to compete in the Florida Southern College Tournament Friday, March 12 through Sunday, March 14.
