Sixth inning hurts USI again on Saturday,
Rain washes out Sunday's action

Late Saturday Scores:
Wayne State 1, USI 0
Gannon 3, USI 2

EAST PEORIA, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team had its final game at the Great Lakes Regional Showdown at the EastSide Centre rained out Sunday. The Screaming Eagles, which were scheduled to play the University of Findlay, finished the weekend with an 0-4 record.

On Saturday evening, USI gave up a run to Wayne State University in the top of the sixth inning and another to Gannon University in the top of the sixth inning en route to two losses.

USI (12-15) fell to Wayne State, 1-0, before falling to Gannon, 3-2. Earlier on Saturday, the Eagles gave up two runs in the top of the sixth inning to Ashland University, to fall 2-0.

In their night cap against Gannon, the Eagles fell behind 2-0 after three innings before putting up a run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to tie the contest at 2-2. However, the Golden Knights led the sixth inning off with a double and then scored the winning run off a single later in the inning.

Senior catcher/utility player Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) drove in the tying run in the fifth inning, while freshman catcher Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) drove in USI’s first run of the weekend with her RBI single in the fourth inning.

Junior centerfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) extended her season-long hitting streak to eight games.

Freshman pitcher Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky) was charged with the loss after giving up three runs, two earned, off seven hits in five-plus innings of work.

Senior pitcher Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) was charged with the loss in the setback to Wayne State despite giving up just one run off four hits. Emmons (5-5), helped herself from the plate by going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

USI will return to action Thursday, April 1, to take on the Oakland City University in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the USI Softball Field.
