Eagles opportunistic in sweep of Indy

USI 1, @Indianapolis 0
USI 6, @Indianapolis 2

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team scored seven unearned runs to sweep a doubleheader against the University of Indianapolis Saturday afternoon. The Screaming Eagles won the first game 1-0 and the second game 6-2 to improve to 16-15 overall and 4-0 in the GLVC.

In game one, senior shortstop Nichole Pike (Fairfield, Illinois) hit a leadoff double to left-centerfield in the sixth inning and came around to score when Indianapolis third baseman Noelle Horvath’s throw went wide of first base. Senior pitcher/infielder Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) reached first on the error that put the Eagles up 1-0.

The Eagles were held to just two hits, with junior centerfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) recording a bunt single in the third inning.

Sophomore pitcher Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) picked up her second consecutive shutout in the first game. Grover (7-8) spread three hits and a walk throughout seven innings.

USI took advantage of three Greyhound errors in the fifth inning of game two to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Indianapolis (7-17, 2-5 GLVC) recorded two more errors in the top of the sixth inning and the Eagles converted those errors into three more runs to take a 6-0 advantage into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Senior catcher/utility player Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) and Emmons each recorded RBIs, while Pike scored a pair of runs. Oelling extended her hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the seventh inning.

A two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning by Indianapolis catcher Courtney Poulos snapped a streak of 26 consecutive scoreless innings by USI’s opposition.

Despite giving up the two-run homerun and 11 hits, Emmons (7-5) held on to pick up the complete game victory. She helped herself offensively by going 2-of-4 from the plate.

The Eagles will travel to Rensselaer, Indiana, to take on Saint Joseph’s College on Sunday. First pitch for the doubleheader is slated for Noon (CDT).
