USI softball improves to 6-0 in GLVC

RENSSELAER, Ind.—Freshman catcher/designated player Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) hit a grand slam in the first inning to help the University of Southern Indiana softball team defeat Saint Joseph’s College, 9-3, in the first game of a doubleheader.

Senior pitcher/infielder Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) and senior catcher/utility player Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) recorded solo home runs in the seventh inning to cap off USI’s game-one victory.

Emmons was 2-of-3 in the first game with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Houseworth went 3-of-4 from the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Sophomore hurler Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) picked up her third straight victory to improve to 8-8 on the season.

USI (18-15, 6-0 GLVC) scored 11 unanswered runs in the second game to defeat the Pumas 11-5. The Screaming Eagles scored twice in the fourth inning, four times in the sixth inning, and five times in the seventh inning to win their sixth straight game.

Saint Joseph’s (8-20, 2-7 GLVC) scored four times in the bottom of the seventh after scoring the game’s first run in the first inning.

Senior shortstop Nichole Pike (Fairfield, Illinois) recorded three RBIs and junior centerfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) recorded a pair of RBIs to lead the Eagles offensively. Oelling extended her hitting streak to a career-high tying 14 games.

Anderson went of 3-for-3 in the second game with an RBI and two runs scored, while freshmen infielders Jennifer Mullikin (Greenwood, Indiana) and Kerrie Burton (Kokomo, Indiana) each drove in a run.

Emmons (8-5) picked up the victory in game two. She gave up just one run off 10 hits in six innings of work.

The Eagles, who are tied with #8 Northern Kentucky University for the top spot in the GLVC, will return home Friday, April 9, to take on Bellarmine University in a noon doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. USI will host NKU Saturday, April 10, at the USI Softball Field.
