Eagles blank Knights,
Improve to 8-0 in league play

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team blanked Bellarmine University, 8-0 and 2-0, Friday afternoon at the USI Softball Field to remain undefeated in the GLVC and run its home winning streak to 18 straight and 34 of its last 35.
USI (20-15, 8-0 GLVC) took advantage of three Bellarmine miscues in the second inning of game one to plate five runners and take a 5-0 advantage. The Screaming Eagles tacked on two more runs in the third and ended the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the first contest, 8-0.
Junior centerfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) had her hit streak halted in the second game, but ran the streak to a career-high 15 games with a 3-of-4 performance in game one. Oelling recorded a double, a run scored, and a pair of runs batted in to lead the offensive for USI.
Senior shortstop Nichole Pike (Fairfield, Illinois) and senior first baseman Monica Tepe (Granger, Indiana) each went 1-for-3 with Pike driving in a pair of runs and Tepe recording three RBIs. Freshman catcher/designated player Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) also recorded an RBI in the first game.
Sophomore pitcher Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) picked up the decision in game one after blanking the Knights on four hits. Grover (9-8), who has won four straight games, struck out four batters while walking two.
Senior pitcher/infielder Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) went 2-for-3 in the second game to lead the Eagles to a 2-0 victory. Emmons drove in Oelling, who had reached on a throwing error by BU third baseman Stephanie Polio, in the first inning to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning to help Emmons to the complete-game shutout.
Emmons (9-5) gave up just four hits and struck out four batters to pick up her fourth straight decision.
USI, winner of eight straight games, will play #8 Northern Kentucky University in a noon doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. NKU (34-2, 6-0 GLVC) was at Kentucky Wesleyan College Friday.
Baring any upsets, Saturday’s contests will be for sole possession of first place in the GLVC. Lewis University and #17 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville are both in the mixture at the top of the GLVC standings with 8-2 marks.
