USI softball to start with No. 2 Kennesaw State
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team will waste little time in finding tough opposition when it opens its 2005 campaign Friday at the Owl Classic in Kennesaw, Georgia. The Screaming Eagles start with No. 2-ranked Kennesaw State University at 9 a.m., before playing No. 5-ranked Northern Kentucky University in a non-conference contest on Saturday at 9 a.m.
In addition to KSU and NKU, the Eagles will play the University of Nebraska-Omaha Friday at 5 p.m. as well as regional foe Wayne State University Saturday at 2 p.m.
KSU has started the season with a 9-1 record, while NKU is 4-0 to start the 2004 campaign. UNO and WSU open their respective seasons Friday at the Owl Classic.
All-GLVC performers Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) and Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) will lead the Eagles offense into 2005. Oelling, a senior centerfielder who earned All-Conference performer who hit .278 with 10 RBIs a year ago, hit .401 as a sophomore in 2003 and earned All-Region honors.
Anderson, a sophomore catcher/designated player that earned All-Region honors last season, was one of the top freshmen in the GLVC in 2004 after hitting .361 with 24 RBIs and a team-high five home runs.
Leading a new-look pitching staff into 2005 is junior hurler Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana). Grover, who is 23-17 during the last two seasons, started 25 games and had four shutouts in 2004.
USI was 26-24 last season, 11-7 in the GLVC, and finished third in the GLVC Tournament. The Eagles are under the direction of fourth-year Head Coach Sue Kunkle, who is 84-60 in her first three years at the helm.
The Eagles open their 2005 home schedule Tuesday when they host St. Mary-of-the-Woods at 3 p.m. at the new USI Softball Field, located at the USI Intramural Fields off Broadway.
