USI softball gets first victories of season
USI 5, New Haven 0
USI 3, California-Pennsylvania 2
KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team recorded its first two victories of the season Tuesday at the Division II Rebel Spring Games. The Screaming Eagles defeated the University of New Haven, 5-0, before posting a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over USI Head Coach Sue Kunkle’s alma mater, California University-Pennsylvania.
USI (2-8) used a three-run home run by sophomore second baseman Kerrie Burton (Kokomo, Indiana) in its first contest against New Haven to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.
Burton’s first-career home run was all the Eagles and junior hurler Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) would need as they cruised to the 5-0 victory. Grover (1-3) gave up just three hits while striking out eight batters as she recorded the complete-game shutout.
Senior outfielder Nickole Henson (Princeton, Indiana) went 2-of-3 from the plate with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI in the winning effort.
Sophomore catcher/first baseman Kristy Groves (Dale, Indiana) went 3-for-3 in the second game and drove in the winning run in the top of the sixth inning to defeat California-Pennsylvania. Sophomore catcher/designated player Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) went 3-for-3 with two solo home runs, including the game-tying shot in the fourth inning.
Junior hurler Lindsay McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) earned the complete-game victory by giving up just two runs off eight hits. McNaughton (1-4) also struck out six batters.
USI will take on East Stroudsburg University Wednesday at 7:50 a.m. before taking on New Haven in a rematch of today’s contest at 11:30 a.m.
