Extend streak to 13 wins
USI 7, Oakland City 0
USI 9, Oakland City 0 (5 innings)
EVANSVILLE, Ind.óThe University of Southern Indiana softball team did not allow a run in two games as it swept a doubleheader from Oakland City University, 7-0 and 9-0 in five innings, Thursday afternoon at the USI Softball Field.
USI (13-8) extends its winning streak to 13 with the sweep and is closing in on the programís record for consecutive victories (16). Head Coach Sue Kunkle also is reaching a milestone as she needs just three more wins to reach 100 in her career.
The Screaming Eagles battled through three scoreless innings in game one before sophomore second baseman Kerrie Burton (Kokomo, Indiana) laced an RBI single into leftfield, pushing across the gameís first run, in the bottom of the fourth inning. USI took advantage of a pair of errors in the sixth inning to score six runs and put the game on ice.
Junior hurler Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) gave up just two hits while striking out seven batters to pick up her eighth straight victory. Grover (8-3) retired the first 11 batters she faced before giving up a two-out walk in the fourth inning.
In game two, the Eagles scored a run in bottom of the second and another in the third before exploding for seven runs in the fourth inning. Junior pitcher Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) connected on a three-run double in the seven-run fourth inning as the Eagles cruised to the victory.
McNaughton (5-4) also picked up her fifth straight decision as she gave up just three hits and struck out six batters in four innings of work. Freshman Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana), in her first collegiate pitching appearance, closed the game out in the fifth inning by retiring all three batters she faced.
The Eagles will open GLVC play Sunday when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Bellarmine University in an 11 a.m. (CDT) doubleheader.
