LOUISVILLE, Ky.óThe University of Southern Indiana softball team swept Bellarmine University, 2-1 and 2-0, Monday at Knightís Field to extend its winning streak to 15 games, one shy of the programís record for consecutive victories (16). The victories were the 98th and 99th of Head Coach Sue Kunkleís career.
Sophomore outfielder/pitcher Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky) had the game-winning RBI in the top of the eighth inning of the first game, while senior rightfielder Nickole Henson (Princeton, Indiana) had an RBI single in the top of the second inning to give the Screaming Eagles all they would need in game two.
Henson, who went 4-for-4 with a run scored in the first game, scored the first run of the afternoon on a single by junior pitcher/designated player Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) in the top of the third inning of game-one. After Hensonís RBI single in the second inning of game two, junior shortstop Krista Nugent (Hurricane, Utah) hit an RBI single in the sixth inning to give the Eagles and McNaughton an insurance run. McNaughton (6-4) blanked the Knights as she earned her sixth straight decision and second consecutive shutout.
USI (15-8, 2-0 GLVC) will return home Wednesday to take on Kentucky Wesleyan College in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at the USI Softball Field.
