@Indianapolis 5, USI 1
USI 4, @Indianapolis 2
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.óThe University of Southern Indiana softball team won the second game of a doubleheader Sunday to salvage a split with the University of Indianapolis at Baumgartner Field. The Screaming Eagles fell in the first game, 5-1, but came back to win game two, 4-2.
USI (19-10, 4-2 GLVC) gave up three unearned runs in the bottom of the third to break a scoreless tie in game one. Sophomore first baseman/catcher Kristy Groves (Dale, Indiana) drove in the Eagles only run of the contest in the fourth inning, but the Greyhounds (15-7, 5-3 GLVC) answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and another in the fifth to seal the victory.
Junior Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana), who pitched two games Saturday, was charged with the loss. Grover (11-5) gave up five runs, two earned, off 10 hits.
The Eagles struck first in game two, plating a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore second baseman Audra Lindenschmidt (Evansville, Indiana) drove in the first run when she doubled to left-centerfield. She came around to score the second run of the game when Groves lined a single through the middle of the infield. Freshman third baseman Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) led the inning off with a double prior to crossing the plate on Lindenschmidtís two-bagger.
With the game tied at two in the top of the fifth inning, the Eagles capitalized on three errors to score the eventual game-winning runs. Junior shortstop Krista Nugent (Hurricane, Utah) led the inning off with a triple down the rightfield line and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by senior centerfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana).
Sophomore catcher Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) drove in USIís fourth run of the game and junior hurler Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) held strong to pick up her seventh straight decision. McNaughton (7-4) scattered eight hits throughout seven innings to give the Eagles the much-needed split.
USI will return home for a 10-game homestand, starting with a doubleheader against McKendree College tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the USI Softball Field. The Eagles will host No. 14-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Thursday in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
