Eagles rally to salvage split

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Quincy University, 5-3, in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday at the USI Softball Field. The win salvaged a split for the Screaming Eagles, who fell to the Lady Hawks in game one, 2-0.

USI (23-14, 6-6 GLVC) trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning of game two, before scoring an unearned run to cut the Quincy lead in half. The Lady Hawks, however, built their lead back to two runs in the top of the fifth inning.

With one out and runners at first and second in the home half of the fifth, senior centerfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) doubled down the leftfield line to break-up a no-hitter and score USI’s second run of the contest. The two-bagger extended Oelling’s hitting streak to 10 games.

Two batters later, sophomore designated player/catcher Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) hit a two-out bloop-single into right-centerfield, driving in two runs and giving the Eagles their first lead of the afternoon.

Junior shortstop Krista Nugent (Hurricane, Utah) had an RBI single in the sixth inning to provide USI some breathing room and junior hurler Lyndsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) an insurance run. McNaughton (9-6) picked up the victory, allowing three runs off six hits in seven innings of work.

In game one, the Eagles racked up seven hits but were unable to get a runner past second base. Quincy, however, put up a run in the top of the first and third innings to come away with the game-one victory. Junior Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) was charged with the loss as she gave up both runs off 10 hits and three walks. Grover falls to 12-7 with the setback.

USI finishes its 10-game homestand Tuesday when it hosts Brescia University in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. The Eagles resume GLVC play Saturday when they travel to Highland Heights, Kentucky, to duel with No. 2-ranked Northern Kentucky University.
