University of Southern Indiana freshman centerfielder Ally McKinley
(Sullivan, Indiana) hit a grand slam and a solo home run, while senior hurler Lindsey McNaughton
(Carmel, Indiana) tossed a one-hit shutout as the Screaming Eagles' softball team swept a doubleheader from Brescia University, 8-1 and 2-0, Tuesday afternoon at the USI Softball Field.
McKinley hit the grand slam to cap off a five-run scoring binge for the Eagles in the bottom of the fifth inning of game one. She broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning of game two with her solo shot.
USI (19-12) also got RBIs out of sophomore third baseman Kristin Eickholt
(Van Wert, Ohio) and junior second baseman Audra Lindenschmidt
(Evansville, Indiana) as well as senior catcher Angie Davis
(Greenwood, Indiana). Eickholt had two doubles in the first game, bringing her season total to 13, just four shy of the single-season school record which was set by Lori Leonard in 1998.
Defensively, the Eagles got great efforts out of their starting pitchers.
McNaughton (8-7) carried a no-hitter into the top of the seventh inning of game two before giving up her first hit of the afternoon. She retired 24 of the first 25 batters she faced before getting herself out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning. McNaughton also had nine strikeouts to lead USI to its fifth straight victory.
Senior pitcher Missy Grover
(Mishawaka, Indiana) picked up the victory in game one. Grover (11-5) gave up just one run off seven hits as she won for the 10th time in 11 starts.
The Eagles, who have hit a .330 as a team during their last 11 contests, return to action Saturday when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Bellarmine University. USI finishes the road trip Sunday in Highland Heights, Kentucky, when it takes on Northern Kentucky University. Both GLVC doubleheaders are slated for 11 a.m. (CDT) starts.
USI returns home Tuesday to take on Oakland City University (3 p.m.) in the first of an eight-game homestand.
