Three Eagles collect academic honors
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team had three players named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District V teams in a vote by the sports information directors in the district.
Senior catcher Angie Davis (Greenwood, Indiana) was named to the second team, while senior pitcher Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) and sophomore outfielder Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) were named to the third team. It is the first time that any of the three have been named to the Academic All-District V team.
Davis has a 3.63 grade point average in elementary education and was one of USI's top run producers this season. She was a first-team All-GLVC and second-team All-Region performer in 2006 after hitting .308 with eight doubles, a triple, three home runs, and 39 RBIs.
McNaughton, a second-team All-GLVC performer, has a 3.53 GPA in elementary education. She finished the season with a 17-11 record inside the pitching circle and had a team-high 112 strikeouts. McNaughton also hit .265 with a team-high tying five home runs to go along with 20 RBIs.
With a 4.00 GPA in exercise science, Wood was a second-team All-GLVC and All-Region performer for the Screaming Eagles in 2006. She led the Eagles in batting average (.392), stolen bases (14), and sacrifices (18). She also had a pair of 11-game hitting streaks in 2006.
To be eligible for Academic All-District and All-America, the nominee must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The student athlete must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and completed at least one full academic year at the institution.
District V includes NCAA II, NCAA III, and NAIA institutions from Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Manitoba and Ontario.
