Eagles lose two at Charger Chillout
DECATUR, Ala.—The No. 23-ranked University of Southern Indiana softball team dropped a pair of contests Saturday afternoon at the University of Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout.
USI (2-6) lost to Delta State University, 8-4, in its first game, before falling, 5-2, to No. 12-ranked Alabama-Huntsville in the second game.
Errors killed the Screaming Eagles in the contest with Delta State as they gave up seven unearned runs, five of which came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lead-off walks led to all of Alabama-Huntsville's runs in USI's loss to the Chargers.
The Eagles conclude the Charger Chillout Sunday with Georgia College & State University at 11 a.m. and the University of West Alabama at 1 p.m.
Delta State (9-9) 8, #23 Southern Indiana 4 (Box Score)
USI battled back from a two-run deficit to take a 3-2 lead by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning and another in the fifth inning.
Sophomore shortstop Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) and senior outfielder Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky) each had RBIs in the fourth inning, while sophomore outfielder Lacey Ligmanowski (Homer Glen, Illinois) scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the fifth.
However, Delta State took advantage of a pair of errors in the bottom of the fifth inning to plate five runs, four of which came on the strength of a home run to straight-away centerfield.
In all, the Eagles committed four errors and gave up seven unearned runs in the 8-4 loss.
Junior hurler Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) was charged with the loss despite giving up just one earned run. Schneider (1-2) surrendered eight runs off seven hits in five and a third innings of work.
#12 Alabama-Huntsville (18-5) 5, #23 Southern Indiana 2 (Box Score)
The Eagles played well enough to win, but a lead-off walk in the top of the first inning and another walk to lead-off the fourth inning led to all five of Alabama-Huntsville's runs.
Junior third baseman Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio), who saw some action in the pitching circle in USI's loss to Delta State, went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Junior outfielder/pitcher Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) also was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Despite a solid effort, junior pitcher Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) was charged with the setback. Harrison (1-2) gave up five runs off eight hits in seven innings of action.
