Eagles pick up two more wins in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla.The University of Southern Indiana softball team gained another regional victory by defeating West Virginia Wesleyan College, 12-1, in five innings Monday at the Division II Rebel Spring Games. The Screaming Eagles also defeated Northern State University (S.D.), 2-0, later in the day.

USI (6-6) racked up a combined 21 hits in the two games and got strong outings from junior hurlers Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) and Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) as it pushed its winning streak to four games.

Junior centerfielder/pitcher Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) was 4-for-4 from the plate with three runs scored and five RBIs against West Virginia Wesleyan, while senior catcher Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) and sophomore shortstop Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) were each 2-of-3 with an RBI against Northern State.

The Eagles return to action Tuesday when they take on Stonehill College at 2 p.m. (CST) and the University of South Dakota at 4 p.m.

Southern Indiana 12, West Virginia Wesleyan (2-4) 1: Box Score

The Eagles scored three in the bottom of the first inning, two in the second, three in the third, and four in the fourth to overcome a 1-0 deficit and gain a big regional victory over West Virginia Wesleyan, 12-1 in five innings. The contest was a rematch from the second round of last year's NCAA II Great Lakes Regional Tournament, a game the Eagles won, 1-0.

Wood led the Eagles with a career-high five RBIs to go along with three runs scored, while Anderson and junior third baseman Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) each recorded multiple RBIs. Anderson also recorded a double, while Eickholt had a triple.

Senior leftfielder Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky) and senior first baseman Jenn Mullikin (Greenwood, Indiana) also tallied RBIs in the victory.

Harrison (3-2) scattered six hits throughout four innings of work to pick up her second straight decision. She issued just one walk and struck out three batters while allowing just one run.

Southern Indiana 2, Northern State (0-7) 0: Box Score

Schneider (3-2) was solid as she retired the first six batters she faced as the Eagles defeated Northern State, 2-0. Schneider allowed just two walks and a pair of hits en route to her second consecutive shutout.

The Eagles got an RBI single out of Anderson in the top of the first inning and an RBI single from McKinley in the sixth as they went on to their fourth straight win.

Defensively, the Eagles were flawless for the fourth straight game. They turned a 5-3-2 double play in the bottom of the third inning to get Schneider out of her only real jam of the contest.
