EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team defeated Northern Kentucky University, 1-0, in game one of a GLVC doubleheader Friday afternoon at the USI Softball Field. The Screaming Eagles fell, 4-1, in the nightcap.
Senior catcher Lisa Anderson's
(Chesterton, Indiana) solo home run in the bottom of the second inning was all junior hurler Amy Harrison
(Graceville, Florida) needed to earn the complete-game shutout in game one. Harrison (9-5) allowed just five hits and struck out three batters while not issuing a walk in the victory.
The Eagles (17-15, 4-6 GLVC) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the second game when junior third baseman/pitcher Kristin Eickholt
(Van Wert, Ohio) hit an RBI single to score sophomore rightfielder Lacey Ligmanowski
(Homer Glen, Illinois) in the bottom of the first inning.
Northern Kentucky (20-16, 5-5 GLVC), however, scored twice in the third inning and two more times in the fifth to grab a 4-1 advantage and break a nine-inning scoreless drought.
Despite out-hitting the Norse, 7-4, the Eagles struggled to put another run on the board as NKU hurler Candace White held the Eagles' battery in check to earn her 10th victory of the season.
Eickholt (4-5), who was 2-for-3 from the plate in game two, was charged with the loss after giving up four runs, two earned, off four hits. She allowed four walks and was plagued by five USI errors.
USI returns to action Saturday when it hosts Bellarmine University in a GLVC doubleheader. First pitch is slated for noon at the USI Softball Field.
