KANSAS CITY, Mo.—
University of Southern Indiana softball junior hurler Amy Harrison
(Graceville, Florida) tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 6-0 win in game one of a doubleheader against Rockhurst University Sunday afternoon. Rockhurst, however, won the nightcap, 5-2, to salvage a split on the day.
Harrison (14-10) took a perfect game into the seventh and final inning of game one before Rockhurst's Lindsay Williams hit a one-out double to the leftfield fence. Harrison stifled the Hawks battery as she struck out seven batters.
The Eagles (25-21, 9-9 GLVC) opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when freshman catcher Tara McConnell
(Henderson, Kentucky) doubled into the right-center gap to plate sophomore shortstop Ally McKinley
McKinley gave the Eagles a 3-0 advantage with a two-run bomb that cleared the leftfield fence in the fourth inning. Junior third baseman/pitcher Kristin Eickholt
(Van Wert, Ohio) hit a three-run home run over the centerfield fence in the next inning to finish off the scoring.
In game two, Rockhurst (12-23, 5-17 GLVC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with runs in the second and third innings. McKinley, however, hit her second home run of the day, this time a two-run blast to straight-away centerfield, in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2.
The Hawks, however, answered in the bottom of the fifth inning with a three-run shot to take a 5-2 advantage they would not relinquish.
Harrison was charged with the loss for the Eagles after allowing five runs off eight hits in six innings. She struck out nine batters, while issuing just one walk in her second start of the day.
The Eagles, who remain in a tie for seventh in the GLVC standings, return to action Wednesday when they travel to Owensboro, Kentucky, to take on Kentucky Wesleyan College in a GLVC doubleheader. USI closes out the regular season next weekend with conference doubleheaders against Saint Joseph's College and the University of Indianapolis.
