Eagles eliminated from GLVC Tournament
Missouri-Rolla (28-15): 6
Southern Indiana (31-24-1): 2
EAST PEORIA, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team fell to the University of Missouri-Rolla in the elimination bracket of the GLVC Tournament Saturday afternoon.
Missouri-Rolla's (28-15) junior shortstop Kelsey Musselman hit three home runs and drove five of the Miners' six runs. All six of Missouri-Rolla's runs came with two outs.
Sophomore shortstop Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) drove in a run in the first inning to pull the Screaming Eagles into a 1-1 tie.
After Musselman's second long ball of the game put the Miners up 3-1, freshman catcher Tara McConnell (Henderson, Kentucky) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in McKinley and cut the Miners' lead to 3-2.
The Eagles (31-24-1), however, could not get any closer as Musselman connected on another two-run shot in the fifth inning to give the Miners a commanding 5-2 advantage.
Junior hurler Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) was charged with the loss, while Missouri-Rolla's Jen O'Hara (18-10) picked up the win. Harrison (18-13) gave up six runs off nine hits in seven innings of work, while O'Hara gave up two unearned runs off three hits to pick up the complete-game victory.
With the loss, USI's season likely comes to an end. In 2007, the Eagles reached the 30-win plateau for the third straight season and the ninth time in 11 years. USI also reached the final four in the GLVC Tournament for the fourth straight year and the fifth time under Head Coach Sue Kunkle.
USI also set records for home runs in a single season (28) and doubles in a single season (75).
